Oil based dirt track just east of Darwin CBD. Some jockeys wear masks to protect themselves from kick back of horses in front of them in the run.

Very difficult for horse to make ground from the back in most races, so horses on pace near the fence are advantaged. Because of this there is always plenty of pace on in races with a mad rush to get across to lead by horses drawn out wide.

So good barriers are a distinct advantage, as is being on or near the lead in all races.
