28.11.11  An Expensive Exercise - Purchasing Tips & Ratings

.....  There are plenty of alleged  winning punters out there in cyberland who are very keen to give out tips almost every day. Most, ask payment for these selections. These tipsters are also very good at telling you all the winners they have selected, alas for the poor punter, they rarely if ever tell the punters how many losing tips they have selected.

Why don't these alleged winning tipsters give a full analysis of all their selections? Why? Because they would show that they don't select enough winners for punters to finish in front of the leger.

As most of these tipsters charge for their tips, it would be an embarrassment for them to show all their selections to punters, especially the losing ones because no one would purchase their selections knowing they cannot win using these tips. Most of these pay for tips services are like the drunk down the pub. They are always quick & loud to let you know when they back a winner, however their mouths are firmly shut when they back a loser. A lot of these tipsters even imitate the blokes at the bar who only tell you after the race that they backed a winner.

The only tipsters worth their salt are the ones who publish selections prior to the race, show full analysis of very selection & do not charge for them.

Gallopers give out free selection in their Gallopers Good Thing page. Not only free, but we also provide punters a full list of every selection & show a leger with profit & loss ratios for every month.

Gallopers do this for two reasons.

Firstly, we do not believe punters should have to pay for tips, especially losing tips provided by plenty of web sites on the internet.

Secondly, we believe all tipsters should be completely up front with all their selections, not just the winners.

So, the best piece of advice punters can take is not to buy tips from anyone, unless they are fully aware of their entire track record.

Gallopers stands by the track record of Gallopers Good Thing. We don't win every month, however over all, we do finish in front, as all selections are recorded for all readers to view.

So, we offer a challenge to all tipsters out there in cyberspace to do exactly as we do. Don't charge for tips, & show all punters every selection (not just the winners).

Gallopers is happy to go head to head with any tipster who charges for their tips. Doubtful we will get any takers on the challenge, because it would mean the tipster would have to make selections before the race )without charging money for the tip) & still finish a winning punter in the long term.

Two main rules about purchasing tips.

1 If the tips were any good, they would not be for sale because if too many people bought the tips the odds would be considerably reduced. If you had a perfect selection method why share, you would keep it to yourself & make a fortune.

2 If the tips looks to good to be true, they are not true at all

Another product offered on the internet in regards to punting are Race Ratings. Plenty of web sites offer these ratings & show winners abounding, quinellas, trifectas & even boast of quadrellas & Big 6 successes on a regular basis. And most of these ratings cost exorbitant amounts of money for the punter to purchase a copy of the ratings.

When punters purchase these ratings they end up with  pages of indecipherable data that would take Einstein years to figure out. And they find alleged winners claimed are rated 4th or even 5th in the race. It is easy to claim a winner of you have 5 selections in every race.

The most important thing in purchasing ratings is to understand how these rating were formulated, what criteria is used & what are the main factors that place one horse ahead of another. The next most important factor is to understand how these ratings arrive at the odds allocated to each horse. Without this understanding, the ratings are as useless as used toilet paper. So, unless the people selling you the ratings are willing to explain in detail how they arrive at final ratings & odds, other than simply saying it is computer generated, then punters should ignore these products.

There are usually within these ratings many different pieces of information, sometimes most ambiguous & unexplained. Some have column upon column of data that is incomprehensible to the reader.  It is imperative that punters are told what each & every item in the ratings are & what their meaning is & how important they are to arriving at finding the winner of the race.

It is also imperative for the punter to understand what filters they need to add to these ratings before actually having a bet. For example, some ratings do not give penalties for an inferior jockey, or a poor barrier, they are an item the punter has to take into consideration after looking at the ratings.

It is easy to compile a set of ratings & odds, we could do it for any race on the Australian racing calendar in a few minutes. We don't because without years of testing & compiling data we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the ratings. And neither can most of the ratings suppliers & even if their data is correct & accurate, they will not inform punters of all the particulars because they don't want you to know everything, otherwise you will be backing the same horses as they are & therefore reduce the odds.

The same two rules apply to purchasing ratings as purchasing tips. However, with purchasing ratings, much more information is required by the purchaser & if the company selling the ratings is not willing to give out all the information & the reasons behind them, then punters should steer well clear.

Over all, punters are better off sticking to their own selection methods rather than paying for tips. All punters need to do is reduce the number of bets they are having by refining selections methods & introducing filters to step them from backing losers.

Being a successful punter is an extremely difficult task. It takes patience & discipline far beyond the capacities of most humans. There is no quick and easy answer, there is no get rich quick scheme, it is all about slowly but surely formulating a profitable selection method & building a bigger bank. Record every bet so you know which horses win & which horses lose & why.

Less than 1% of the population profit from punting (or gambling). Which means 99% of people who gamble will lose in the long term, and this includes many of those who sell race horse tips.

The only way most of these allegedly succesful tipsters that sell their selections can make any money is by duping punters into paying them for what will always in the long term be, an expensive exercise for the purchaser.
